You are probably reading this because you are frustrated that you seem to be doing all the right things but your body isn't changing, right? Maybe you are working out 4-5x a week, eating somewhat healthy, etc, but you aren’t losing body fat. Maybe it's all the things you did in your 20's but now, you can't seem to get things to budge despite your efforts that USED to pay off! Although there are so many things that could be playing into this, here are 3 reasons you might not be and what you need to change.
1. First off, understand that exercise only makes up 5% of your daily caloric burn, which is SO SMALL compared to 20% NEAT (non exercise movement or calories burned through day to day movements such as cleaning, walking to the mailbox, in and out of the house, downstairs, fidgeting, cooking, etc.). I see SO many make this mistake of putting a lot of weight into the workouts but not movement OUTSIDE of the workouts. I would rather you focus on moving your body MORE consistent first before implementing workouts due to how much it plays a role in progression. I encourage you to start to move your body OUTSIDE of exercise. It contributes more than you realize! You can't workout and sit the rest of the day, never move and expect to see change.
2. There is a difference between working out and intentional strength training. Working out can mean going through the motions, not focusing on muscle CONTRACTION, just burning calories but not being intentional about the muscular contraction in movements, that is required to create the “toned” physique you want. To build muscle, it takes muscular contraction, intentionality, focusing on form vs just “going through the motions”. I'd rather you workout for 30 min with INTENTION than 60-90 min without. That is going to yield more progress. Time doesn't matter as much as intention.
3. IT’S YOUR NUTRITION. Firstly, eating healthy is NOT 100% the same as eating for fat loss. I see so many make the mistake of focusing on working out but not fueling PROPERLY where your body is actually going to go through the “rebuilding” post workout. You tear your muscle fibers APART in the gym and RECOVER outside of the gym via sufficient food + REST. Meaning, yes, if you workout 4-5x a week but you are either eating too little, too much or the improper ratio of protein to carb to fats for your goals, your body will not change. This ratio is going to be dependent on the person, their goals, activity levels, diet history. Understand you can spend all the time you want in the gym but the “unveiling” of that muscle is done through nutrition largely.
